The Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) of New Mexico is
made up of representatives from around the state, the majority of which have
disabilities, who are appointed by the Governor. It is a consumer controlled
organization which develops, monitors, and evaluates the federally funded State
Plan for Independent Living in the state of New Mexico, which promotes the Independent
Living philosophy statewide. The SILC also provides support and technical
assistance to the entire network of Centers for Independent Living (CILs).
Our Mission
The New Mexico Statewide Independent Living Council is committed
to promoting a philosophy of consumer control, peer support, self help, self
determination, equal access, and individual and systems advocacy, in order to
maximize leadership, empowerment, independence, productivity, and to support
full inclusion and integration of individuals with disabilities into the
mainstream of American society. It is our mission to
educate and advocate for policies, resources, practices, and attitudessupported by the independent living
philosophy.
